The Cathedral is an impressive building dating from 1555. It holds a sarcophagus containing the remains of Francisco Pizarro. Its cloisters, decorated with beautiful ceramic tiles, has an interesting museum of vice regal art containing a valuable collections of works. Beneath it are catacombs that are more than three hundred years old. Close by are the church and convent of Santo Domingo, and the monastery and church of Los Descalzos.

Museums and Culture
Like any capital city, Lima contains the most important museums displaying the history of the country in pre-Inca and Inca times as well as later. The National Museum of Anthropology, Archaeology and History contains an important collection of ceramic, textiles and jewellry from different cultures such as the Chavin, Mochica, Chimu, Tiahunaco, Pucara Puno, Paracas, Nasca, and Ica Peru.
The Larco Herrera Museum has a splendid private collection of ceramics, particularly from the Mochica Culture. It also has a gallery containing fine examples of gold and silversmithy, including a complete pectoral ornament in gold once used by a Chimu chieftain. Its gallery of erotic ceramics is very popular.
Huaca Pucllana Archaeological Treasure
Huaca Pucllana is a pre-Inca pyramid built of adobe bricks. It was one of the most important administrative and ceremonial centres of the Lima culture, which flourished between 200 and 700 A.D. in the Chancay, Chillon, Rimac and Lurin valleys. There is now an on-site museum exhibiting articles found during the excavation work. Occasionally it forms the backdrop for music and other events.
This monuments is one of the most impressive examples of Lima’s enormous cultural treasure. In the heart of Miraflores and built around the 5th century A.D., Huca Pucllana is one of the city of Lima’s most important monuments, in the middle of a residential area and an example of the preservation archaeological heritage.
