Waqrapukara Trek

During the Waqrapukara Trek Full Day, we will explore a pre-Inca and Inca archaeological complex. The cultural significance and history of this impressive Inca monument are matched only by the stunning natural beauty of its surroundings.

Waqrapukara is located southwest of Cusco, within the rural community of Huayqui, in the district of Acos, province of Acomayo. This location marks the starting point of one of the most significant hydrographic basins in the Cusco region, the Apurímac River.

The meaning of Waqrapukara is a compound word of Quechua origin “Waqra: Horn and Pucara: fortress” whose meaning is HORN-SHAPED FORTRESS.

The history of Waqrapukara dates back to the pre-Inca era, when the first settlers of this region were the Canchis. This culture was the first to inhabit the valley. Later, the Inca culture arrived and conquered the territory, leading to Waqrapukara being administered by the Incas.

This archaeological site features ceremonial centers, Inca terraces, plazas, and stairways, all connected by a network of original Inca roads. For this reason, it is believed that the site served administrative, religious, and social control functions. Given the layout of the buildings, it can be concluded that it was an important Inca ceremonial center.

Waqrapukara Trek Full Day Itinerary

To visit this Inca ceremonial center, there are several travel routes: Sangarara, Huayqui, and Santa Lucia. We will choose the third option, as it seems to be the best choice for visiting Waqrapucara in one day.

Day 1: Cusco - Cusipata - Santa Lucia – Waqrapukara

Our trip begins early in the morning. We will pick you up at your hotel in Cusco and we take the route from Cusco to Puno. Along the way, we will stop in Cusipata, where a delicious breakfast will be included.

After this, we will continue until we reach the Chuquicahuana bridge, where we take the road that crosses the Vilcanota River towards the town of Pomacanchi. From this point, the road changes to a paved surface.

On the route, we will be able to see the remnants of the original Inca Trail, known as Capacñan, that lead south towards Collasuyo. Additionally, we will observe the raising of llamas and alpacas, which is the main economic activity of the local people.

We will arrive in the town of Santa Lucia, where we will take our transport along the road until we reach the starting point for the hike to Waqrapukara. The journey from Cusco to the start of the hike will take approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes to 4 hours by tourist transport.

The Waqrapukara Trek takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. This scenic route features beautiful landscapes as we follow the left bank of the Apurímac River. Once we arrive at the archaeological park, we will have 2 hours to explore this impressive site.

Waqrapukara offers us an exciting new tourist opportunity in the city of Cusco, featuring stunning natural landscapes and one of the most significant Inca ceremonial centers located southwest of the city. The best part is that this tour can be completed in just one day, making it a worthwhile visit for both national and international travelers.

After this visit, we will begin our return journey, which will take 45 minutes until we reach our transport back to the city of Cusco. In Cusco, there are both traditional and non-traditional one-day hikes. For traditional hikes, we offer daily departures in both shared and private groups.

The visit to Waqrapukara is included in our non-traditional one-day hikes; therefore, most of our services to this location are offered as private tours. You can plan your visit independently by taking the buses from Cusco to Sicuani. Once you arrive in Sicuani, get off at the Chuquicahuana bridge and then take an express bus to Santa Lucia. However, for a better experience and added safety during your visit, we recommend using the services of a travel agency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Waqrapukara located?

Waqrapukara is located southwest of the city of Cusco, in the province of Acomayo, within the district of Acos. It sits high in the Andes surrounded by the Apurímac River canyon, offering breathtaking natural scenery and a peaceful atmosphere. This Inca fortress stands at approximately 4,300 meters (14,107 feet) above sea level, making it a perfect blend of history, culture, and nature in one destination.

What does Waqrapukara mean?

The name “Waqrapukara” comes from two Quechua words: “Waqra” meaning horn, and “Pukara” meaning fortress. Together they translate as “Fortress in the shape of a horn.” The site was named after its unique rock formations that resemble two giant horns rising from the mountain, a sacred symbol for the Incas and the earlier Canchis culture that once inhabited the area.

How difficult is the Waqrapukara hike?

The hike to Waqrapukara is considered moderate. While it’s not extremely challenging, a basic level of physical fitness is recommended due to the high altitude and the approximate 8 km (5 miles) walking distance. The trail includes gradual climbs and descents and takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the archaeological site. It’s an excellent option for travelers who enjoy hiking and want to experience both nature and history in one day.

When is the best time to visit Waqrapukara?

The best time to visit Waqrapukara is between March and November, during Cusco’s dry season. During this period, the weather is more stable, with clear skies and comfortable conditions for hiking. From December to February, rain is more frequent, so it’s important to bring a rain poncho and waterproof footwear if you choose to visit during the wet season.

What time does the Waqrapukara tour start and end?

The tour starts early in the morning, with hotel pickups between 4:00 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. It is a full-day excursion that includes transportation to the Santa Lucía community, a guided hike, and time to explore the site. The return to Cusco is usually between 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., after a full day of adventure surrounded by history and stunning Andean landscapes.

What is included in the Waqrapukara tour?

The Waqrapukara tour includes hotel pickup, round-trip tourist transportation, a professional guide specialized in history and nature, breakfast, a box lunch, and a first-aid kit with emergency oxygen. These services are designed to ensure a comfortable, informative, and safe experience for every traveler during the day-long adventure.

What should I bring for the Waqrapukara hike?

We recommend bringing a small backpack, hiking shoes or comfortable sneakers, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a rain poncho, a reusable water bottle, snacks such as chocolate or energy bars, and some local currency in soles for small expenses. Layered clothing is also advisable, as temperatures can vary significantly throughout the day—cool in the morning and evening, and warmer during the hike.

Is this hike recommended for travelers who aren’t acclimated to high altitude?

Since Waqrapukara sits above 4,000 meters (13,000 feet), it’s highly recommended to spend at least two days in Cusco beforehand to acclimate to the altitude. This helps prevent altitude sickness or “soroche.” Stay hydrated, avoid heavy meals, and consult your doctor if you have health conditions that could be affected by high elevation. Taking it slow and drinking coca tea—an Andean natural remedy—can also help your body adjust.

Can I hike to Waqrapukara on my own without a tour?

While it is technically possible to visit Waqrapukara independently, it’s not recommended. The trails can be confusing, and weather conditions or altitude may pose challenges for inexperienced travelers. Booking with a certified travel agency ensures transportation, an experienced guide, and safety assistance throughout the journey, making it a much more comfortable and enriching experience.

Why is visiting Waqrapukara worth it?

Waqrapukara is a hidden gem in the Cusco region that combines adventure, mysticism, and ancient history. Its archaeological remains—terraces, stairways, and ceremonial platforms—reveal the engineering brilliance of the Incas. Beyond history, its location overlooking the Apurímac Canyon offers panoramic views that few destinations can match. It’s perfect for those seeking a less crowded alternative to traditional treks, filled with authenticity and deep cultural connection.
